การค้นพบไดโนเสาร์ครั้งแรก
First Dinosaur Discovery
กระดูกไดโนเสาร์ที่กรมทรัพยากรธรณีสำรวจพบเป็นครั้งแรก พบที่ภูประตูตีหมา อุทยานแห่งชาติภูเวียง อำเภอเวียงเก่า จังหวัดขอนแก่น ในปี พ.ศ.2519 โดยนายสุธรรม แย้มนิยม นักธรณีวิทยา กรมทรัพยากรธรณี ขณะสำรวจแร่ยูเรเนียม กระดูกที่พบเป็นส่วนปลาย ของกระดูกขาหลังท่อนบนข้างซ้าย ของไดโนเสาร์กินพืชขนาดใหญ่ มีอายุประมาณยุคครีเทเชียสตอนต้น หลังจากนั้นจึงเกิดโครงการ ความร่วมมือระหว่างกรมทรัพยากรธรณี และผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านสัตว์มีกระดูกสันหลัง จากประเทศฝรั่งเศส ได้ทำการสำรวจไดโนเสาร์ และสัตว์มีกระดูกสันหลังร่วมสมัย จากชั้นหินมหายุคมีโซโซอิก และหลังจากนั้น ได้มีการค้นพบไดโนเสาร์ และสัตว์ร่วมสมัยในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือจำนวนมากมาย
